MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 25 Georgia College Men's Basketball team (10-3) never really got out of the gate in a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Semifinal matchup Thursday night with Georgia Southwestern State University (13-4) at the Centennial Center. The No. 2-seed Bobcats fell to No. 3-seed GSW 75-56.
The Hurricanes advance to take on No. 1-seed Flagler College in the title game Sunday, March 7 in St. Augustine, Florida. The Bobcats now hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA South Regional.
The loss snapped a nine-game win streak for GC, as the stifling Hurricane defense held the Bobcats to a season-low in scoring. GC had trouble knocking down shots and was held to a season-low 31 percent shooting from the field, including just 16 percent from long range.
Freshman Luke Chism (Dawsonville) led the Bobcats in scoring with 10 points, adding four rebounds. Juniors Chapin Rierson (Calhoun) and Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS [Ga.]) added nine points each, the latter with a team-high six rebounds and three assists.
The Bobcats never led in the ballgame, tying the game at 2-2 early on before a 12-4 run for the Hurricanes. The GSW advantage reached as high as 11 in the first half. The Bobcats got it down to a one-possession game at 26-23 on a dunk from Christian Koneman (Chatsworth) at the 4:20 mark, but wouldn't score again for the remainder of the half, hitting the break down 33-23.
Things looked good early on in the second, as the Bobcats cut the lead down to 36-30 just under two minutes in on a pair of Chism free throws. But again, the Bobcats went cold, not scoring for the next six minutes and finding themselves down 46-30.
The Bobcats were ranked No. 3 in the most recent South Region poll, released Wednesday. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced Sunday, March 7 at 10:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
