MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Baseball team (12-10, 10-9 PBC) found themselves on the short end of a pitchers' duel Friday night, falling 2-1 to Georgia Southwestern State University (12-11, 11-8 PBC) in 10 innings at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats' Josh Hudgins (Dunwoody) went toe-to-toe with 2019 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Pitcher of the Year Tucker Smith and didn't blink, each man surrendering a single run.
Smith (4-1) tossed nine frames, fanning 11 and scattering five hits with three walks. Hudgins didn't factor in the decision, and was a sharp six innings, fanning five with just a single run and six hits. He turned things over to Brennan Crooms (Metter) who was just as strong, throwing four innings with just a single run and striking out four.
A sacrifice fly from catcher Austin Holloway (Social Circle) put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the third. It took until the sixth for GSW to even things out, as Jonathan Martin swatted a solo home run.
In the top of 10th, an infield single and walk put the first two runners on for the Hurricanes. Greg Wozniak squared to sacrifice bunt, pulled back and chopped a ball through the middle to score the go-ahead run. The Bobcats had a runner on third, but couldn't get the clutch hit to even things up in the bottom half.
Shortstop Cassius Young (Atlanta) was 2-for-4 with a double.
The Bobcats finish the series in a doubleheader with GSW tomorrow, April 3 at 1 p.m..
