GC Softball Dominates Shorter on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROME, Ga.- The Georgia College Softball Team (7-19,1-9 PBC) swept both games of a doubleheader on the road at Shorter University (4-24, 0-18) Wednesday, 9-3 and 15-4.

Game one belonged to the Bobcats in a six-run win over the Hawks. GC took the lead early, manufacturing the first three runs in the top of the third. The first run came off a double steal, as Katelyn Hobbs (Thomasville) took second and Lauren Sommerer (Loganville) swiped home. Hobbs came in to score on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. Golden Thrower (Hanahan, South Carolina) finished the inning's scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

The Bobcats sealed the win with four big runs in the top of the seventh, the final runs of the game coming from the bats of MacKenzie Hoffman (Rocky Face) and Haley Howell (Rochelle). Hoffman singled to right field to plate Carlie Behan (Cumming). Howell soared one over the fence for a three-run home run, her second blast of the season.

The start and the win for game one went to the junior MacKenzie Michels (Lilburn). Michels (4-8) fanned two batters and only allowed two earned runs on six hits in her five innings of work.

Howell finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run. Thrower was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Game two was a phenomenal offensive game for the Bobcats, buzzing by the Hawks with 15 total runs in a six-inning run-rule game. Samantha Vinson (Jefferson) doubled to center to plate Hobbs for the first run of the game. Hobbs came back up in the third, crushing a three-run home run to increase the lead. The round-tripper was her team-leading fifth this season. MacKenzie Martin (Dacula) singled in a run as part of the six-run third as well.

Thrower added an RBI double and Ashley Schell (Cumming) a run-scoring single, both in the fifth. GC scored five more in the sixth, with Vinson providing an RBI double, Sydney Newberry (Springfield) a run-scoring single and Hoffman driving in the final two with a single of her own.

The winner and starter for game two was Thrower (1-7) who earned her first victory of the season. Thrower fanned three batters and only allowed four earned runs on nine hits in the complete-game effort.

For Vinson, three was the magic number, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, driving in three runs and scoring three times. Hoffman had three hits in five trips, tallying two RBIs and a run. Howell had two more hits and three runs scored, while Newberry was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, April 11 at Lander University at 2 p.m. Live stats and live broadcast of the game will be available with links at GCBobcats.com.
