GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College Baseball team (14-13, 12-12 PBC) fell victim to early runs, starting the series at Lander University (15-15, 11-13 PBC) with a 9-4 loss Friday.
The Bearcats put one up in the first, three more in the second and a four-spot in the third, leading 8-1 after three. The Bobcats couldn't get the big inning they needed, scoring single runs over four different frames to fall short.
Shortstop Cassius Young (Atlanta, Georgia) was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Catcher Austin Holloway (Social Circle, Georgia) fired off three singles in four at-bats. Designated hitter Baylin Moore (Albany, Georgia) lifted a solo home run to center in the fourth, and leftfielder Matthew Chester (Evans, Georgia) added his own solo blast in the eighth. For both Moore and Chester, the home runs were the first in their careers.
Bobcat starter Josh Hudgins (Dunwoody, Georgia) took the loss (3-3), throwing seven innings with six earned runs.
With a double in the third, senior Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia) picked up his 291st career hit, passing GC Athletics Hall of Famer Greg Winters (1996) into fourth in school history and also taking the school's NCAA-era record.
The loss puts GC at 12-12 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, positioned seventh in the league standings. GC is four games out of the top four, as the top four teams qualify for the PBC Tournament beginning May 7.
The Bobcats finish the series with Lander in a doubleheader tomorrow, April 10 at 1 p.m.
