GCSU Women's Hoops Strong in Win over Southern Wesleyan, 74-46

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University Women's Basketball team (1-0) started the 2022-23 season with a bang Friday, clobbering Southern Wesleyan University (0-1) 74-46.

The Bobcats had a massive first half, taking the first quarter 28-6 and leading at the break 51-15. They used a balanced attack to take down the Warriors, as 11 different players reached the scoring column.

Today's season opener was part of a Conference Challenge Tourney at the Centennial Center. Game two was a 61-60 victory for Augusta University over Barton College.

The Bobcats were led by 14 points from senior Harper Vick (Marietta), hitting 6-for-9 from the field. Myra Strickland (Duluth) had 12 points off the bench, including a pair of threes.

Sophomore Alexa Geary (Calhoun) added 11 points, while classmates Ashyia Willis (Gainesville) and Alexis Figures (Buford) posted 10 points each.

The Bobcats dominated the glass, owning a 53-30 advantage in rebounding, led by seven each from Dashaun Jackson (Miramar, Florida) and Rose Bone (Monroe). Bone also had a team-best five assists. The Bobcat reserves outscored the SWU bench players, 31-15.

The 74 points are the most by a Bobcat Women's Basketball team since netting 79 against Albany State University Dec. 8, 2018. The last time the Bobcats had a 50-plus point half was Dec. 5, 2015 against Belmont Abbey College.

The Bobcats are now 2-2 in season openers with head coach Ross Jolly and have never been beaten in home openers with him at the helm.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m., hosting Barton.
