Newberry Double Provides Walk-Off Win for GC Softball, 5-4

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – An extra-inning shot to right center completed a miraculous comeback for Georgia College Softball (12-30, 4-18 PBC) as the Bobcats beat Augusta University (14-28, 3-19 PBC) 5-4 in eight innings Friday at the Peeler Complex.

The Bobcats trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, and just a couple innings later walked away with a win.

Freshman Divina Checo (Marietta) provided a run-scoring single to center in the sixth, cutting the lead to 4-2. Things looked pretty bleak in the seventh, as the Bobcats were down to their last out, still trailing by two. A crucial Jaguar error would bring in a pair to prolong the game, forcing extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, junior Jessica Owens (Social Circle) led off with a walk, and freshman Jaycee Haycraft (Louisville) entered to pinch run. After a sacrifice bunt pushed Haycraft to second, sophomore Sydney Newberry (Springfield) ripped the second pitch she saw into the right-center gap to bring in Haycraft for the win.

Sophomore righty Montana Ledbetter (Hanna City, Illinois) picked up the win with a complete game. Ledbetter (6-8) allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits and four walks and fanned seven.

Senior leftfielder Carlie Behan (Cumming) was honored prior to the contest for Senior Day and responded with a 2-for-3 effort, including a triple and a run. Centerfielder Eliza Kuhne (Sharpsburg) was 2-for-4, and had a stolen base.

The Bobcats and Jaguars finish the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, April 30 starting at 1 p.m.
