COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Georgia College Baseball team (33-20) saw the 2022 campaign come to a close Saturday, falling 15-4 to Columbus State University (42-10) in day two of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship Tournament.
The No. 1-seed and PBC Regular-Season champ Cougars will advance to take on No. 4-seed Young Harris College on championship Sunday.
The national No. 8 CSU looked every bit the part Saturday night, exploding for 15 runs on 16 hits.
Things looked good for GC early on, leading 2-0 after a hot start to the first inning. Seniors Austin Holloway (Social Circle) and Sam Sly (Atlanta) each drove in runs with singles in the inning.
The Cougars then took over the game in a big way, tallying 10 runs on eight hits and a Bobcat error in the third. CSU never looked back from there, adding insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Bobcats were unable to get the difference under 10 runs by the seventh, and the game finished in a run-rule.
Sly finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Holloway was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, tagging a solo home run to left in the seventh, his second this season.
Righty starter Brennan Crooms (Metter) fell victim to that big third frame, taking the loss (7-4) in 2 1/3 innings, his first defeat since a loss at the Cougars April 23.
The Bobcats wrap up a 33-20 season, the most victories for GC Baseball since 2018. GC tied a program record with eight All-PBC Team awards this season.
