AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University baseball team (12-13, 9-4 PBC) scored all of their runs in the sixth inning and beyond, but couldn't overtake Georgia Southwestern State University (15-9, 11-5 PBC) falling 6-5 Friday.
The Bobcats spotted the Hurricanes a 6-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. GCSU got its bats going in the sixth.
Third baseman Ben Tuten (Bristol) blasted a two-run home run to get things started. Second baseman Palmer Sapp (Dawsonville) added an RBI single. Designated hitter Baylin Moore (Albany) got the Bobcats a run closer in the eighth with an RBI triple.
Down two heading into the top of the ninth, the Bobcats got things going with a two-out single from Matthew Chester (Evans). Then came a walk and consecutive wild pitches. Chester scored on the second errant toss, but GCSU's rally ended with the tying run on third.
Centerfielder Evan Cowan (Richmond Hill) had a pair of singles in five trips. Tuten's home run was his third this season, and the fifth of his Bobcat career.
Starter Josh Hudgins (Dunwoody) was tagged with the loss, falling to 3-2 this season. He went five innings, giving up his first earned runs of the season while striking out five.
The Bobcats and Hurricanes square off again tomorrow, March 25 at 6 p.m.
