GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College & State University Baseball team (15-18, 12-8 PBC) split a doubleheader at Lander University (15-22, 10-10 PBC) Thursday, responding from a 7-5 loss with a 7-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bobcats tied the game in the top of the eighth with RBI singles from Baylin Moore (Albany, Georgia) and Ben Tuten (Bristol, Georgia). Lander would answer, however with two more runs in the bottom half and a scoreless ninth to take the game.
Moore finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while leftfielder Matthew Cassandra (Cumming, Georgia) added his own 3-for-4 game, driving in one. Second baseman Palmer Sapp (Dawsonville, Georgia) had two hits in four trips, scoring twice and driving in another.
Rookie lefty Caden Tillman (Hamilton, Georgia) was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-1. He was GCSU's most effective pitcher of the game, going 3 1/3 innings with a walk and three hits for two unearned runs. He struck out one.
Game two featured another dominant effort from senior lefty Luc Scudellari (Roswell, Georgia), finished off with some strong relief from freshman righty John Raines (Powder Springs, Georgia). Scudellari (5-2) spun six shutout innings, scattering four walks and four hits while striking out four. Raines took the final three frames for his fifth save, not allowing a hit, striking out six and walking a pair.
The Bobcats got three runs in the second, and added another three in the fourth to push it further out of reach.
First baseman Jaxon Weatherford (Charleston) had a double as part of a 3-for-5 game, tallying two RBIs. Tuten had two more hits in game two, adding his own double and scoring twice. Moore was 2-for-5 in game two as well, driving in two and scoring two runs. Moore finished the doubleheader a combined 5-for-9 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a stolen base.
The Bobcats and Bearcats are hopeful to try and fit in game three of the series sometime tomorrow, April 7. It is currently scheduled for 2 p.m., but there are heavy rains headed to the area.
