Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University Baseball team (22-25) wrapped up their 2023 campaign Saturday, falling 10-8 to Augusta University (26-23) in a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament elimination game.
The Bobcats jumped up early with four runs in the second, capped by a bases-clearing double from first baseman Jaxon Weatherford (Charleston, South Carolina). Two more came across in the sixth including a run-scoring single from centerfielder Evan Cowan (Richmond Hill).
The Jaguars answered in a big way in the seventh, with a 10-run inning. Augusta used nine hits, two walks and a hit batsman as the Jaguars took over 10-6.
That one massive inning would be enough, as GCSU pitchers held the Jaguar offense scoreless in the other seven plate appearances. GCSU brought two runs across in the top of the ninth, both on bases-loaded walks, but the Bobcats could inch no closer.
Weatherford had a big day, going 3-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and a run. Cowan finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while designated hitter Mason Spivey (Appling) added a pair of singles in four trips as well. Rounding out the multi-hit performers was rightfielder Brandon Bellflower (Milledgeville) at 2-for-5 with a run, extending his hit streak to 15 games.
Righty reliever Davis Swenson (Toccoa) took the loss as one of three pitchers to throw in the challenging seventh, he falls to 2-5 on the year.
The loss brings a close to the season for Bobcat Baseball, highlighted by a trio of Bobcats earning All-PBC awards in Bellflower, Ben Tuten and Luc Scudellari.
