SPARTANBURG, S.C. | Zyair Greene and
Ian Davis combined for 47 points to lead Georgia College & State University past Converse University 91-83 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday (Nov,. 16) evening at the Tom & Tracy Hannah Gym.
The Bobcats picked up their first win as they improved to 1-3, while the Valkyries suffered their first loss to fall to 1-1. GCSU returns to action Wednesday (Nov. 20) when they travel to Rome, Georgia, for a 7:30 p.m. game against Shorter University.
GCSU jumped out to a 16-6 lead after Davis, who had 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting (4-of-5 from three-point distance), converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 13:29 left in the first half.
The Bobcats held a 41-36 lead at the half, but the Valkyries took their first lead at 48-46 lead with 10:20 remaining and expanded their advantage to 12 points (66-54) on an Edo Buffo layup with 10:01 to go.Â
However, the Bobcats put together an 18-3 run, culminating in a Greene layup that put the Bobcats up three points (72-69) with 5:26 left. Greene finished with 25 points and four assists. Converse briefly reclaimed the lead at 80-78, but GCSU took the lead for good at 81-80 on a
Khalil Green fastbreak three-pointer with 1:50 to play. Greene finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Greene expanded the lead to four (84-80) with 63 seconds to go. GCSU salted the game away from the free throw line as they sank 7-of-8 opportunities down the stretch to keep the Valkyries at bay.
The Bobcats held a 43-35 advantage on the glass.
Tony Carpio led GCSU with eight rebounds, while
Luke Krawczyk posted seven.
