Hit parade propels Bobcats to doubleheader sweep over Shorter

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball dominated Shorter University in the midweek doubleheader to pick up the sweep. GCSU won game one 14-1 and game two 10-2. 

Georgia College improved to 9-4 on the season while Shorter fell to 1-9. The Bobcats open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 24 against Flagler College in doubleheader fashion starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Peeler Complex. 

The first game of the doubleheader got off to a hot start as GCSU plated seven runs on seven hits in the first inning. Emily Hobbs and Kam Caldwell both led the inning off with a two base knock. Hobbs was the first run to score on the Caldwell double. Jessica Owens pushed Caldwell in on an RBI single through right ride to make 2-0 Bobcats. Karlie Gutierrez and Stephanie Condland both got themselves aboard via the single to bring Maddie Todd to the plate who reached on an error by the Hawks shortstop. Lauren Rule picked up her career first RBI on a walk. GCSU batted around in this inning to brings Hobbs back up who cleared the bases on a single down the right field line to quickly make is 7-0.

Georgia College continued to plate runs hanging a two spot in the second inning. On her first career hit, Rule pushed two more runs around to score on an RBI single to left field to make it 9-0. Divina Checo plated the 10th run of the ball game in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Bobcats solidified the win plating four runs in the fourth inning. Reina Checo picked up the first hit of the inning which was her career first. A walk to Golden Thrower loaded the bases and Gutierrez picked up another RBI as she drew a walk of her own. Caroline Pollock nabbed an RBI on the day as she also drew a bases loaded walk to make it 12-0. Riley Barsby had her first career hit on the day as well on a two RBI single up the middle to make it 14-0. 

R. Checo, Barsby, Gutierrez, and Rule all had perfect 1-for-1 game one performances. Caldwell had a perfect 3-for-3 day to add to her impressive junior campaign. To round out the game one offensive dominance, Hobbs had a 2-for-3 game one. 

Jana Shellhorse got the start and and the win in the circle to make her 2-1 on the season. She fanned three batters in three innings while allowing zero hits. Kaitlyn Anders was the first reliever pitching a single inning allowing no runs on two hits. Kelsey Parlor closed the game only allowing one run in her single inning of work. 

In game two the Bobcats spread out the run production through six innings including three, three run innings. Caldwell kicked off the contest with a walk and then came around to score on a ground out by Gutierrez. Come the third inning Caldwell and Owens got themselves aboard on a single and a double respectively. Gutierrez then launched her second home run of the season to put the Bobcats ahead 4-2. The fourth inning was quiet for the GCSU bats but the fifth inning mirrored the third. Owens reached base on a single then Mackenzie Martin earned her way on base via the free pass. D. Checo then rifled off her second round trip shot of the season to make it 7-2 Georgia College. GCSU then put the Hawks to bed with yet another three run inning in the sixth. Caldwell picked up two more RBI pushing the eighth and ninth runs around on a single through the right side. Gutierrez walked it off on an RBI double down the right field line for the 10-2 Bobcat win. 

The hits were plentiful as several batters had multi-hit days. Owens had the most as she had an outstanding 3-for-4 day at the plate. Caldwell went 2-for-3 and Gutierrez added a 2-for-4 performance. 

Shelby Jones got the start and the win in the circle making her 3-1 on the season. She only allowed two runs in five innings while striking out four. Anders closed the game with zero runs coming around in her lone inning of work.
