Bobcats pick up road split with Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C.- Georgia College & State University Softball hit the road to take on Anderson University and came home with a split. The Trojans took game one 7-3 and the Bobcats took game two 10-3.

Georgia College now stand at 11-7 while AU is 7-11. GCSU jumps back into conference play Saturday, March 2 on the road at Columbus State University for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.

Game one was a run dispersal win by the home team but the Bobcats chipped away at the lead. Anderson plated their first four runs in the first two innings with two coming around in each inning. Come the third inning, Kam Caldwell made the first dent in the Trojan lead on a double through the right side to score Eliza Kuhne who reached on a single. Karlie Gutierrez drove in the next run on a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Emily Hobbs who also reached base via a one base knock. Anderson took the 5-2 on a solo home run in the fourth inning. Jessica Owens ripped a double in the fifth to score Kuhne making it 5-3. AU would go on to plate a run in the fifth and sixth innings to pick up the 7-3 win.

Caldwell led the offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI and pair of doubles.

Jana Shellhorse got the start and the loss in the circle pitching three innings with five runs scoring on five hits and two strikeouts. Kelsey Parlor pitched the final three innings of the contest with two earned runs scoring on four hits and four strikeouts.

Game two was a hit barrage for the Bobcats as they picked up the 10-3 win. Caldwell led things off with a single and a stolen base. Gutierrez drove a single through the right side to score Caldwell for the first run in the first inning. Anderson knotted the game at one in the second inning. GCSU had their first of two big innings with four runs coming around to score. Owens pushed the first two runs around on a double to the fence to plate Caldwell, who reached on a single, and Hobbs who got her way on base via the two base knock to make it 3-1. Divina Checo put the ball in play and caused a Trojan error to push another run around. Mackenzie Martin pushed Checo around on a single through the left side to make it 5-1. Anderson plated two more to hang in the ball game at 5-3. Georgia College countered with a three run fourth inning kick started by a Shea Zweifel infield single. Hobbs drove in Zweifel on an infield single to make it 6-3. A wild pitch by the Trojans scored Hobbs from third to make it 7-3. Checo picked up the third infield single of the inning to plate run number eight. In the sixth inning, Checo made it a 9-3 game on a home run over the left field fence. The Bobcats closed the game with a moonshot from Hobbs to solidify the 10-3 win.

Hobbs led the offense going 3-for-4 with three runs score, a run batted in, a double and a home run. Caldwell went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Checo added a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Martin rounded out the double digit hitters with a 2-for-4 day.
 
Shelby Jones got the complete game win with only one of the three runs scored being earned. She picked up six strikeouts and only allowed four hits.
