Box Score LEXINGTON, S.C. | Gabriel Wuerth's grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Georgia College & State University baseball team an 11-7 come-from behind victory over the University of Mount Olive Wednesday (Feb. 28) afternoon at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
The Bobcats even their record at 8-8, while the Trojans fell to 8-4. GCSU opens up Peach Belt Conference play Saturday (March 2) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia.
It was the second consecutive game that GCSU ended with a walk-out home run. The Bobcats'
Cam McNearney hit a three-run homer Sunday (Feb. 25) to defeat the University of North Georgia 8-5 in 11 innings.
Mount Olive had taken a 7-6 lead with a three-run homer of its own in the top of the ninth.
Braeden Smith led off the winning rally with a walk off UMO reliever Hayden Myrick (0-1) and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Evan Cowan. A RBI single up the middle from
Matthew Cassandra tied the game at 1. A walk to McNearney loaded the bases, before Wuerth deposited the first pitch he saw over the right-center field wall for his first long ball of the season.
GCSU took a 2-1 lead in the first on a two-run double from
Braeden Smith.
Brandon Bellflower, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a single, added a solo home run to right field in the third inning to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. McNearney's two-run double in the sixth gave GCSU a 5-4 lead in the sixth before
Mitch Cowan drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to add an insurance run.
Jacob Ryan (2-1) earned the win in relief.
Evan Cowan and
Mitch Cowan each had two hits as the Bobcats collected 13 overall.
