SAINT LEO, Fla. | The No. 16-ranked Georgia College & State University women's tennis team finished in second place at the PTR Collegiate Cup hosted by Saint Leo University Saturday (Feb. 3).
The Bobcats defeated Tusculum University 4-1 in the morning semifinal match before dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 5 Saint Leo in the afternoon championship match.Â
GCSU improved to 1-1 and will return to the GCSU Tennis Courts for its home opener Friday at 2 p.m. against Texas A & M University - Kingsville,
The Bobcats made quick work of the doubles point as they defeated the Pioneers in all three flights to take a 1-0 lead.
Chiara Santoro and
Ashley Bentz collected straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to open up a 3-1 lead.
Jada Young sealed the GCSU victory at No. 1 with a three-set win. Young dropped the opening set 6-2 before rallying for a 6-3, 6-2 win.
In the championship match against Saint Leo, the Lions earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Saint Leo won all three of the completed matches in singles, although Bentz fell in three sets (7-5, 3-6, 3-6) at No. 3 for the Bobcats.
