Bobcats make quick work of Saints in PBC sweep

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University made quick work of Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Sunday (March 24) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats recorded a 4-0 shutout of the Saints that took two hours and 10 minutes in game one, while Jacob Ryan only needed an hour and 59 minutes to register a complete game as GCSU defeated Flagler 7-1 in the nightcap.

With the weekend sweep, the Bobcats won their fourth consecutive game as they improved to 18-11 overall and moved into first place in the PBC at 9-3. Flagler fell to 11-17 and 5-7. GCSU closes out the homestand Tuesday (March 26) as the Bobcats host Valdosta State University in a 5 p.m. game.

Georgia College opened up a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning of the opener. Gabriel Wuerth started the rally with a RBI single up the middle and Brandon Bellflower followed with a two-run homer - his fifth of 2024 - to right field on the first pitch from Flagler starter Cooper Smith (3-3).

The Bobcats added an insurance run an inning later as Matthew Mebane drew a bases-loaded walk.

Bradley Wilson, Owen Thomas and Lex Kenny combined on the one-hitter.  Ryan Newland led off the game with a single up the middle for the lone hit for the Saints.

Owen Thomas (1-1) earned the win with three scoreless innings, while Lex Kenny earned his fourth save as he pitched the final three innings for the Bobcats.

GCSU clubbed 12 hits, led by Evan Cowan, who had three. Braeden Smith and Wuerth had two apiece.

In the nightcap, Ryan (5-1) tossed the second complete game of 2024 for the Bobcats. Ryan allowed just five hits while walking one and striking out five.

Cam McNearney started the Bobcat scoring in the second with an RBI infield single in the second. Mebane stroked a two-run homer to left-center field in the third to give GCSU a 3-0 lead.

After the Saints got a run back in the top of the sixth, the Bobcats added two runs in their at-bat. Wuerth scored on a wild pitch before Mebane doubled down the left field line to give GCSU a 5-1 lead.

Mebane closed out the scoring in the eighth as he connected on a two-run homer to left-center field for his team-leading 14th long ball.

The Bobcats added a dozen hits in game two with Mebane, who drove in five runs, and McNearney having three hits apiece. Bellflower added two hits.
