Batting barrage boosts Bobcats over Augusta in doubleheader sweep

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball secured the series win in the doubleheader sweep of Augusta University. The Bobcats took game one 6-2 and game two 9-1 in run rule fashion.

GCSU improved to 20-17 on the season and 4-10 in the Peach Belt Conference. AU fell to 12-24 overall and 4-13 in the conference. The two squads will complete the series Saturday, March 30 at noon.

Georgia College put themselves on the board early taking the early 1-0 lead on a Karlie Gutierrez RBI single up the middle in first inning. Augusta tied the game and took their only lead of the ball game in the top of the second inning on a solo home run and a passed ball. GCSU knotted the game at two in the following half of the frame on an RBI single up the middle from Kam Caldwell. The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning with the first coming on an RBI single through the right side from Mackenzie Martin. Maddie Todd picked up a pinch hit and made it a 4-2 game on a fielder's choice to plate a run. Gutierrez plated the final two runs of the game on a missile of a home run over the left field fence to give the Bobcats the 6-2 win.

Caldwell led the offense in the first game scoring two runs and pushing around an RBI on a 3-for-4 outing including a double. Martin went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Emily Hobbs had a .500 game one with a run scored and a double. Gutierrez swung the big stick going 2-for-4 scoring a run and driving in three with a round trip shot.

Jana Shellhorse threw a gem of a game picking up the complete game win to improve to 6-6 on the season. Shellhorse only allowed two runs to score on four hits while striking out five.

Augusta scored their first and only run of the game in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Georgia College countered with a three spot in the home half of the frame. Stephanie Condland knocked a bases loaded double to the right centerfield gap to bring in three runs making it 3-1. GCSU pushed run number four around on an RBI double from Hobbs in the second. Run five came around to score as Martin rifled a triple down the right field line in the third. Gutierrez stayed hot in game two picking up an RBI in the fourth inning on a single up the middle now 6-1 Bobcats. Divina Checo drove in two runs on single through the right side to set GCSU up for a run rule victory. Hobbs put the ball in play and Checo came around to score on an errant throw from the Jaguar shortstop to give the Bobcats the 9-1 win in five innings.

Both Condland and Martin had perfect 3-for-3 performances in game two of the doubleheader. Condland rocked two doubles and drove in three RBI and scored a run. Martin had a double and a triple to score one run and an RBI. The Bobcats had 12 hits in the contest with Condland and Martin accounting for six of them with four of their six hits being for multi-bases.

Shelby Jones improved to 7-5 on the season with the complete game win. Jones only allowed a single unearned run on two hits while picking up four strikeouts.
