GCSU drops PBC opening series with Augusta after doubleheader loss

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Baseball fell twice in double header with Augusta University. The Bobcats fell in game one 11-8 and 9-7 in game two. 

GCSU fell to 9-10 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt Conference. AU improved to 10-9 on the season and 2-1 in the PBC. The Bobcats take a break from conference play to travel to the University of West Georgia for a Tuesday contest at 4:00 p.m.

Game one was a back and forth contest with a two run eight inning to push the Jaguars over Georgia College. Matthew Mebane kicked off the first inning with a two run home run to give GCSU the early 2-0 lead. Mason Poole pushed the third run of the inning around as he put the ball in play to force an AU error making it 3-0. Augusta countered with a five run first inning to make it 5-3 in their favor. They proceeded to plate two in the second to make it 7-3 and one in the fifth to make it 8-3. Georgia College tied the game at eight all on a five run sixth inning. Gabriel Wuerth pushed around the first run on a double to right field. Braeden Smith rifled a three run shot to make it 8-7. Poole closed out the inning with single to center field to plate the eighth run. Augusta went on and scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to win 11-8. 

Smith had an impressive .500 game with three runs batted in, two runs scored and a home run. Brandon Bellflower and Mebane both went 2-for-5 with Bellflower having a two base knock and a run scored and Mebane adding two RBI, two runs scored and a home run. 

Jacob Ryan got the start on the bump throwing three innings with seven runs coming around to score. Aidan McConnell picked up the first relief effort going two innings with only one of four runs scored being earned. Owen Thomas got the loss for game one throwing one inning only allowing one run. John Raines threw the final two innings only allowing two runs. 

Game two started out in favor of the Jaguars as they struck in the first inning with a three spot. Both teams went scoreless in the second and third innings. The Bobcats knotted the game at three apiece on a three run fourth inning. The first run scored as the catcher had an errant throw to plate Smith on a stolen base from Hank Noonan. Mitch Cowan drove in the tying runs on a two run blast to make it 3-3. GCSU took the lead in the in the fifth inning with Wuerth scoring on a wild pitch and Smith driving in another run on a double down the right field line to make it 5-3. AU had a big sixth inning taking the lead 9-5 with a six run inning. Georgia College tried to make the comeback in the seventh inning bring two runs around in the seventh inning. Evan Cowan and Noonan both drove in runs on RBI ground outs. Augusta won 9-7. 

Smith and M. Cowan both went 2-for-3 in game two as they both had doubles and Cowan added a home run. Bellflower went 3-for-5 with two runs scored ro round out the offensive leaders. 

Lex Kenny got the start and the loss on the mound for GCSU throwing five innings with seven runs scoring. Kenny also fanned four batters. Raines picked up his second relief outing of the day throwing a single inning picking up two strikeouts with two runs scoring. AJ Mathis closed the game pitching two innings while fanning three batters with zero runs scoring.
