Bobcats seal regular season with series sweep of Sand Sharks on senior day

MILLEDEGVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball brought the regular season to a close with two wins over the University of South Carolina at Beaufort to pick up the series sweep. The first today was 5-0 and the second game 3-1 both in favor of GCSU.

The Bobcats finish the regular season at 27-26 overall and 10-14 in the Peach Belt Conference. USCB finished their season 20-25 and 4-20 in the PBC. Georgia College will return to action for the first round of the PBC tournament in Columbus, Ga. On Friday, April 26 against Lander University at 5:00 p.m.

Georgia College plated their first runs of the 5-0 win in the first inning with a two-run inning. Emily Hobbs led the contest off with an infield single. She was driven in on a double through the left side from Golden Thrower. Shea Zweifel then drove in Jessica Owens, who reached on a hit by pitch, with a single up the middle. The bats went quiet until the fourth inning where the Bobcat hung their second two spot of the contest. Hobbs reached on yet another infield single and was driven in on Kam Caldwell's second home run of the season. Hobbs plated the fifth and final run of the ball game on a solo nuke over the left field fence.

Hobbs led the offense going 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and a missile over the fence to score three runs and bat one in. Zweifel had a stellar game at the plate going 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI. Caldwell had a stellar .500 day with a home run and a double to account for two RBI and a run scored.

Shelby Jones picked up her second complete game shutout win of the season. She only allowed four hits while nabbing four strikeouts in 25 batters faced.

In the final game of the series the Bobcats plated all three of their runs in the third inning. Eliza Kuhne and Hobbs led the inning off with a pair of singles. Karlie Gutierrez reached base on an error by the Sand Shark third baseman to load the bases. Owens rifled a ball to right field for a two RBI single for the first lead of the day. Divina Checo drew a walk with the fourth ball doubling as a wild pitch to plate Gutierrez. USCB avoided the shutout scoring one run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly. The Bobcats won 3-1.

Hobbs once again with a superb day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Owens was perfect in game two going 1-for-1 with a two base knock good for two RBI and added two walks.

Jana Shellhorse got the complete game win in the circle only allowing one run on two hits through seven innings. She also picked up five strikeouts.
