DAHLONEGA, Ga. | Riley Frost's grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth rallied the University of North Georgia past Georgia College & State University 11-9 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday (April 28) afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
The Nighthawks improved to 29-17 overall and 14-10 in the PBC, while the Bobcats fell to 28-20 and 18-9. Both teams will advance to the PBC Tournament next weekend. The brackets will be released by the conference office Monday (April 29) morning. GCSU has one more regular season game remaining as they will host Newberry College in a 5 p.m. contest Wednesday (May 1) at John Kurtz Field.
North Georgia jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings as the Nighthawks scored twice in the first, third and fourth frames.
Georgia College battled back with four runs in the fifth and sixth innings and another run in the seventh to open up a 9-6 advantage.
Brent Burford started the scoring for the Bobcats with a two-run double in the fifth before
Braeden Smith added an RBI double and
Matthew Mebane followed with run-scoring single up the middle.
GCSU took the lead on
Gabriel Wuerth's grand slam to right field in the sixth. It was Wuerth's third homer of the season.
The Bobcats scored their final run in the seventh on a
Cam McNearney RBI single to left.
John Raines (4-2) took the loss for the Bobcats.
GCSU posted 13 hits with Smith collecting three. Wuerth, Mebane, McNearney and Burford added two hits apiece.
