MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- Georgia College & State University Softball split a Tuesday afternoon two game set with North Greenville University. Georgia College took game one 9-1 in five innings and the second game fell towards North Greenville 11-5.
GCSU now sits at 23-22 on the season with NGU sitting at 28-16. The Bobcats return back to conference play at the University of North Georgia for a 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 13.
Game one was a run rule victory in favor of GCSU with nine runs scoring on 13 hits. NGU struck first with a run in the first inning. The Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of the frame on an RBI was to
Reina Checo. GCSU took their first lead of the game on a
Divina Checo double down the right field line.
Karlie Gutierrez tacked on an insurance run with a single up the middle to score D. Checo making it 3-1.
Caroline Pollock picked up the start in center field and slugged her first hit as a Bobcat doubling as her first home run in the blue and green to make it 6-1. R. Checo picked up her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to right field to plate
Shea Zweifel who reached on her season first triple.
Jessica Owens walked the game off on a two RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning, 9-1.
D. Checo had an outstanding game at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored with a double and a pair of singles. Gutierrez and Pollock both went 2-for-3 in game one. Gutierrez had a pair of singles with an RBI and a run scored. Pollock had a single and a laser over the fence to score twice and drive three runs in.
Emily Hobbs went 2-for-4 with a run scored. R. Checo went 1-for-1 with two RBI.
Jana Shellhorse picked up her eighth win in the circle for the Bobcats on the complete five inning game. She only allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Game two teetered towards the Crusaders 11-5. NGU scored in the first inning to take the early lead. GCSU countered with
Kacie Wiggins scoring on a sacrifice bunt from D. Checo. North Greenville added three runs in the third inning to take the 4-1 lead. They pushed two more around in the fourth inning making it 6-1.
Mackenzie Martin cut the lead in half on a two RBI single to right centerfield. NGU pushed another run around in the fifth inning, 7-3. R. Checho made it a two-run ball game in the home half of the frame on a double up the middle to plate two runs. North Greenville plated two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to take the game 11-5.
R. Checo and Martin led the offense going 2-for-3. R. Checo nabbed two RBI on a double and came around to score. Martin reached base twice on a pair of singles.
Shelby Jones got the start and the loss in the circle for the Bobcats. She threw three and two thirds' innings with six runs scoring, five of which were earned, on four hits.
Kelsey Parlor threw 1.1 innings with one run scoring on three hits.
Golden Thrower closed the game pitching the final two innings with four runs scoring, only two were earned, on four hits.
