SALISBURY, N.C. | No. 5 Catawba College shut out No. 19 Georgia College & State University 8-0 in game two of the NCAA Division II Baseball Southeast Super Regional Saturday (May 25) afternoon at Newman Park.
The Catawba Indians, who were the No. 1 seed in the regional, improved to 44-15 and they will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship in Cary, North Carolina, that begins June 1.
The Bobcats, who were seeded seventh in the regional, were shut out for the first time this season as they ended the campaign at 37-22. The 37 wins were the most since GCSU, which made their 15th appearance in the NCAA tournament in program history, won 44 games in 2018.
Catawba starter Payne Stolsworth improved to 11-3 as he scattered five hits and five strikeouts over eight innings. GCSU starter
Bradley Wilson fell to 4-4 as he allowed two runs over four innings.
GCSU had five hits, with
Mitch Cowan collecting two.
Braeden Smith.
Matthew Mebane, and
Cam McNearney accounted for the other hits.
The game marked the final ones in a GCSU uniform for four seniors - McNearney,
Brandon Bellflower,
AJ Mathis and
Jacob Ryan.Â
