AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia Southwestern State University kept its foot on the gas as they dominated Georgia College & State University 89-57 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 25) night at the Storm Dome.
The Bobcats fell to 5-12 overall and 0-7 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes collected their first conference win and improved to 7-10 and 1-6. GCSU looks to snap its seven-game losing streak with a bounce-back win against Clayton State University Monday (Jan. 27) at 7:30 p.m. inside the Centennial Center. The PBC game against the Lakers is a rescheduled contest due to the winter weather the area experienced earlier this week.
The Bobcats will hold their inaugural Teddy Bear Toss sponsored by the GCSUÂ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at the game Monday (Jan. 27). Fans can attend the game for free if they bring a bear or they can purchase a bear for just $5 at the door. The Bears will be donated to the Baldwin County Department of Family and Children Services as well as area first responders.Â
The Hurricanes would collect the lead from the jump in the contest, opening with a small but comfortable 5-0 run, including a dunk from Tim Hall Jr. However, the first GCSU points would come from a Zyair Greene three-pointer. While the score would play nicely to open the game, staying manageable for the Bobcats, their deficit would quickly get into the double-digits. A jump shot by the Hurricanes' Lars Nilsen would add to their lead, bringing the differential to 20 (41-21) right before halftime. Nilsen led the Hurricanes with 24 points.
The story would stay the same for the remainder of the contest, with the Bobcats never able to decrease the deficit below 18 points. The Hurricanes' Justine De La Cruz would make a three-point jump shot to increase the lead to 34 as the time dwindled in the contest.
Khalil Green would lead the Bobcats in points with 10, followed by James Nichols III and Greene with nine a piece. Luke Krawczyk would grabbed eight rebounds, with Tony Carpio collecting six more. The Bobcats struggled from the field, shooting only 26.2 percent.
