MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Georgia College & State University used wildness by Augusta University pitchers as they recorded a 15-3 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory in seven innings Friday (Feb. 28) evening at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats improved to 7-10 overall and to 1-0 in the PBC, while the Jaguars slipped to 4-14 and 2-2. The middle game of the three-game series is set for 3 p.m. Saturday (March 1).
Six different Augusta pitchers issued 10 walks, tossed three wild pitches and hit three batters as GCSU scored in every inning, but the third and sixth innings.
After Augusta scored twice in the top of the first before GCSU scored four times in the bottom half. After the first two Bobcats reached on a free pass,
Braeden Smith tied the game at 2 with a double to the left-center field gap.
Matthew Mebane drove Smith in with a single to left-center off Augusta starter Caleb Bohn (0-3) and the Bobcats added an unearned run.
Ben Hamacher added a RBI double in the second and Smith added a sacrifice fly in the fourth as the Bobcats took a 6-3 lead. GCSUÂ broke the game open with nine runs in the fifth on just two hits to take a 15-3 lead. Jaguar hurlers walked in four runs on bases-loaded walks and scored two more times on hit batters with the bases loaded.Â
John Luke Glanton improved to 3-1 with the complete-game win, striking out four.
Smith drove in four runs, while Mebane and
Rand Bestermann each drove in two. Hamacher and Mebane each tallied two hits, while Smith, Hamacher and
Gabe Wuerth each recorded a double . Every starter scored at least one run.
