MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | The Georgia College & State University softball team doubled up Columbus State University 6-3 in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams Friday (Feb. 28) evening at the Bobcat Softball Field.
The Bobcats improved to 7-8 overall and to 1-0 in the PBC, while the Cougars fell to 12-3 and 0-1. The teams close out the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 1).
GCSU jumped on CSU starter Julianna Franklin (7-2) for two unearned runs in the first.
Karlie Gutierrez drove in the first run on a double, while
Sydney Lancaster added an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Kam Caldwell made it 3-0 an inning later on a RBI single that scored
Kacie Wiggins, who started the rally with an infield single.
Columbus State got two runs back in the fourth to close witin 3-2, but the Bobcats added three big insurance runs in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.
Reina Checo drove in the first run on an infield single before Caldwell knocked in two with a double to left-center field.
Caldwell and Gutierrez each had two hits, while Caldwell drove in three runs.
Shelby Jones (3-5) earned the complete-game victory in the circle as she scattered four hits and struck out nine.
