FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University had 15 hits - all singles - in its softball doubleheader against Emmanuel (Ga.) University Tuesday (April 1) afternoon.
The Lions used the run rule in the first contest, winning the opener 10-2 in six innings. The nightcap was much closer, with the Lions winning 2-1.
GCSU fell to 18-17, while Emmanuel improved to 16-19. The Bobcats continue their season with a Peach Belt Conference three-game set against No. 8 University of North Georgia, with game one beginning Friday (April 4) at 5 p.m. at the Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium in Dahlonega, Georgia.
Emmanuel jumped on starter Jacy Singleton in the third after two scoreless innings, knocking in four runs off a home run from Kelsey Lester, a two-run single from Jaryn Gibson, and an RBI single from Gabby Buffington. Three more runs came across in the third and fourth innings off of Shelby Jones, before Karlie Gutierrez and Sydney Lancaster drove in a pair on RBI singles in the fifth.
Gibson plated two more in the sixth on a double, and Buffington finished the game on a single to drive in Gibson.
Cassidy Jenkins (7-6) picked up the win, giving up only two runs and eight hits; however, she pitched without a walk or strikeout.
Reagan Garrett connected on a home run in the second inning off GCSU starter Annalise Knop to give the Lions a 1-0 lead, and followed that up with an RBI single in the following inning for some insurance.
The Bobcats loaded up the bases with one out in the top of the seventh on consecutive hits from Reina Checo, Maddie Todd, and Emily Hutcheson. But, they only forced home one run on a sacrifice fly from Samantha Wilson.
Carly Forrester (6-5) collected the win on seven innings of one-run work, permitting eight base runners–seven hits and one walk, striking out two.
Caldwell, Gutierrez, and Lancaster each had two hit performances in the opener of the doubleheader.
