MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | A five-run sixth inning gave the No. 29 University of North Georgia enough momentum as Georgia College & State University fell 11-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday (Feb. 13) night at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats dropped their conference opener, falling to 1-6 and 0-1 in PBC play, while the Nighthawks improved to 8-1 and 1-0. GCSU is set to conclude the three-game set against UNG with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 14), at John Kurtz Field.
The Nighthawks plated the opening run in the third, as Cam Hodge singled in Ben Hamacher, and Hamacher added a run himself in the fifth, as J.D. Coleman came around to score.Â
North Georgia's offense came alive in the sixth, with a pair of the runs coming on bases-loaded walks, and the big blow of the inning from a Kyle Robitzsch two-run single to center.Â
After going without a hit through the first five innings, the Bobcats put a crooked number on the board as Ty Petrovich singled in Blake Bellflower and Carson Phillips singled in Petrovich.Â
The Nighthawks added four more runs before it was all said and done, as the Bobcats struggled with keeping runners off the base paths in the seventh and ninth innings.Â
Matthew Heard (3-0) continues his dominant start to the season, throwing seven two-run innings while striking out eight. Keaton Prior (0-2) pitched 4.1 strong innings, giving up two runs and striking out five.Â
Blake Bellflower's double was the only Bobcat extra-base hit, while Petrovich, Carson Vick, Carson Phillips, and Cole Huddleston each had a hit.Â
