Bobcats, Hurricanes split final games of Peach Belt series

AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University and Georgia Southwestern State University split the final two games of their Peach Belt Conference baseball series Sunday (Feb. 22) afternoon at Hurricane Stadium.

GCSU won the completion of Saturday's (Feb. 21) game that was suspended due to rain 10-6, while Georgia Southwestern won the regularly scheduled game 11-3.

The Bobcats improved to 2-12 overall and to 1-5 in the Peach Belt, while the Hurricanes improved to 10-5 and 5-1. GCSU returns to John Kurtz Field Friday (Feb. 27) when they open up a three-game PBC series at 6 p.m. against the University of South Carolina-Beaufort.

In the first game, the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings. GCSU scored the run in the first inning on a wild pitch and Blake Bellflower added a sacrifice fly in the second.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the second, before the Bobcats broke the game wide open with two runs in the fourth and pushed across three more in the sixth to take up a 7-2 lead.

Cole Huddleston and Evan Cowan each drove in a run in the fourth on singles, while Luke Boone did the same in the sixth. Carson Phillips was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth.

The Hurricanes got a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull within a run at 7-6. However, Carson Vick made sure the Bobcats would get the win as he added an RBI double to right-center in the eighth and drove two more in on a single through the left side an inning later to give GCSU a 10-6 lead.

Huddleston collected four of the 13 hits by the Bobcats, while Cowan and Vick had two apiece.

Jake Beaver (1-2) earned the win for the Bobcats as he struck out four in six innings, while Griffin Davis earned his second save with 2.2 scoreless innings of work, allowing just two hits and struck out four.

In the regularly scheduled game, the Hurricanes score 11 runs in the middle three innings to take control.

The Bobcats pushed across a run in the fifth on a wild pitch and two more in the seventh on James Beaver's home run to left field.

Besides James Beaver, Phillips, Ty Petrovich, Blake Wood, Tanner Patterson and Huddleston had a hit apiece. Petrovich's hit was a double.

Gavyn Sietz (0-1) earned the loss for GCSU.
