COLUMBUS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University dropped a tight matchup against Columbus State University 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference softball series opener Friday (March 13) evening at Cougar Field.
The Cougars improved to 14-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Bobcats fell to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in the Peach Belt. The teams close out the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 14).
The teams battled through six scoreless innings as Georgia College's
Sydney Garrett and Columbus State's Khloe Shears battled in the circle. Garrett had a strong outing for the Bobcats, only allowing two hits and one run with three strikeouts over six innings.
Columbus State broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run from Aubree Ussery to give the Cougars the walk-off victory.
Georgia College finished with six hits in the contest but was unable to push a run across.
Maddie Todd highlighted the Bobcats' offense with a double in the first inning, while
Sydney Lancaster,
Annalise Knop,
Emily Hutcheson,
Karlie Gutierrez and
Kacie Wiggins each added a hit.
