AUGUSTA, Ga. | Georgia College & State University hit three home runs, but it wasn't enough as Augusta University took the Peach Belt Conference baseball series finale over the Bobcats 12-7 Sunday (March 22) afternoon at Jaguar Field.
The Jaguars improved to 15-14 overall and to 11-7 in the league, while the Bobcats slipped to 12-17 and 8-10 GCSU returns to John Kurtz Field Tuesday (March 24) with a 5 p.m. contest against in-state rival Valdosta State University.
After Augusta took a 1-0 lead in the first, GCSU scored twice in the top of the second as
Tanner Patterson homered to right field and
Evan Cowan added an RBI singles to center field. It was Patterson's second homer of the season.
The Jaguars took a 4-2 lead in with a three-run fifth, but the Bobcats rallied in their next at-bat with three runs to tak a 5-4 lead.
Carson Phillips drove in a run on a grounder and
Luke Boone followed with a two-run double to center.
Augusta took the lead for goof in the bottom of the sixth 8-5 with four runs. The Jaguars added two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to open up a 12-5 advantage.
GCSU got its final runs in the ninth on solo home runs from
Blake Bellflower and Cowan. It was the second long ball of the year for Bellflower and the first for Cowan.
Cowan had four of the 13 hits clubbed by GCSU, with Patterson,
Cole Huddleston, and Bellflower added two safeties apiece.
Harding Dennis fell to 1-1 with the loss in relief.
