MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Lander University used three home runs and scored the first seven runs of the game as the Bearcats defeated Georgia College & State University 13-6 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday (April 11) afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
The Bearcats improved to 23-18 overall and to 16-10 in the PBC, while the Bobcats fell to 16-22 and 10-13. The teams play the rubber game of their weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday (April 12).
Lander took advantage of back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to open up a 2-0 lead in the second. The Bearcats added an RBI ground out before Oliver Zohn closed out the inning with a two-single to open up a 5-0 lead.
Ryan Hansen added a two-run homer just inside the left field fair pole in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.
Cole Huddleston drove in the first GCSU run on a fielder's choice in the fourth. After Lander got a run in the fifth before the Bobcats scored twice in their half of the inning to get within 8-3.
Evan Cowan had a sacrifice fly and
Carson Phillips added an RBI single to left-center field.
Zohn and Brody Winter had back-to-back home runs to left off the sixth to expand its lead to 11-3. GCSU got three runs back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single back up the middle from
Trevor Allan and a Cowan single to right.
The Beacats scored their final two runs in the seventh.
Cowan and Phillips each had two hits as the Bobcats collected seven overall. Allan and Cowan each drove in two runs.
Harding Dennis (1-3) took the loss on the bump for GCSU.
