PEMBROKE, N.C. | Georgia College & State University split a pair of matches Tuesday (Sept. 15), highlighted by a five-set victory over Elizabeth City State University in a tri-match hosted by UNC Pembroke.
GCSU came out strong against Elizabeth City State, taking the opening set 25-15.
Sierra Piland helped spark the Bobcats with three early kills as GCSU established control. The Bobcats later put together four unanswered points and closed the set on another four-point run to secure the 25-15 victory.
After dropping the next two sets 26-24 and 25-19, GCSU responded with a 25-21 victory in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set. The Bobcats closed out the match with a 15-12 win in the fifth.
Emersyn Mullvain led the Bobcats with 10 kills, while
Sierra Piland and
Kendra Leboehi added eight apiece.
Ile Bernis dished out 26 assists, followed by
Miki Parrott with 20.
Finley Burns recorded a team-high four service aces.
Milla Smith posted a team-high 26 digs, with Bernis adding 10 and
Haley Mendoza nine. Mullvain led GCSU at the net with seven blocks, followed by
Kendra Leboehi and
Molly Fitzpatrick with six apiece.
Earlier in the day, GCSU fell to UNC Pembroke in four sets. Avery Huyck led the Bobcats with 14 kills and only three errors, with Piland and Fitzpatrick adding seven kills apiece. Bernis distributed 22 assists and Parrott added 19.
Smith led the defensive effort against the Braves with 31 digs. Bernis and Parrott collected 10 digs apiece, while Huyck added seven.
The Bobcats finished the tri-match 1-1 and moved to 3-11 on the season.
