The Georgia College Department of Athletics has promoted John Green to head coach of Bobcat Cross Country in February 2022.

“We are thrilled that John will be leading our program,” said Wendell Staton, Director of Athletics. “He was such a vital cog in our success this past season where we maximized our talent. This was the most rewarding year I’ve had, and his positive imprint impacted every part of our program. I watched him work with our team every day. In my 30-plus years in this industry, John is on a shortlist of leaders I have seen that can mentor, challenge and care in such a unique fashion.”

“The way he coaches and leads are very appealing and just what we want with our culture at Georgia College. From his training plans to recruiting, he will provide an outstanding student-athlete experience.  I look forward to his leadership taking our outstanding culture and competitiveness to even greater heights.”

Green spent the 2021 fall season as the Assistant Coach for the Bobcat Cross Country team and helped lead the Bobcat Men to their third-place finish at the PBC Championship meet. The third-place finish matched the Bobcats best conference finish in over a decade.

“I am thrilled to be starting as the cross-country coach at Georgia College,” says Green. “We’ve got a great group of student-athletes and I’m looking forward to seeing them grow, both as runners and as people. I’m excited about where the program is now, but I’m even more excited about where these young men and women can take it in the coming years.”

Green has always been involved in cross country, his efforts in high school (2013-16) rewarded him with two top-10 finishes at the 6A Cross Country State Championships when he attended West Forsyth High School. In 2014 he received eighth place, and in 2015 he placed third.

From there he went on to run at Lipscomb University for three years. During his time there, he was able to help his team win an ASUN Conference Championship in 2017. In 2019 Green transferred to UT-Martin where he helped the Skyhawks to a fourth-place finish at the OVC Conference Championship. This was the best result in Skyhawks' history. He also ran his personal best over 1500 meters (3:59). 5000 meters (14:36) and 8k cross country (24:46).
