MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -The No. 19 Georgia College
& State University soccer team (13-1-4, 6-1-2 PBC) shredded the
Lander University Bearcats (7-9-1, 1-5-2 PBC) 2-0 in the first
round of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament tonight (Nov.
4) at Bobcat Field.
This was Georgia College's seventh shutout at home this season
setting adding to a school-record with 13 overall for the season.
The Bobcats are also undefeated at home this season as well as
undefeated at home in all-time PBC Tournament play. This win puts
them ahead 3-1-2 in all-time meetings against Lander.
GCSU struck early at 6:59 when Kara Teresi (Tampa,
Fla.) sailed a free kick past goalie Katherine Baltz to
lead 1-0 over the Bearcats. The goal was Teresi's first this
season. Baltz, who snagged four shots tonight with a complete game
effort, gave up another goal in the second half.
"I'm proud of the team," said head coach Juan Pablo
Favero. "They kept control of the ball and their
emotions in what was an extremely physical game."
The Bobcat defensive line stood its ground allowing only two
shots to reach goalkeeper Mary Rob Plunkett
(Augusta, Ga.). Plunkett had two second-half saves during
her 90 minutes of playing time.
In the second period, Daria Owen (Snellville,
Ga.) and Jeni Day (Marietta,
Ga.) worked around the Lander defense on the right side to
find the foot of freshman Megan McAlpin
(Newnan, Ga.) who netted the second goal of the night. The
goal was McAlpin's sixth of the season while the assist was the
second this year for both Owen and Day.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Nov. 7 in Evans, Ga. at
Blachard Woods Park as they take on the No. 2-seed team, No. 10
UNC-Pembroke (17-1-1, 6-1-1 PBC). During regular season play, the
Lady Braves gave Georgia College its only loss of the season 1-0.
Kick-off begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday for the semifinals of the
conference tournament.
