MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- The No. 20 Georgia College
& State University softball team (7-2, 2-0 PBC) split its
Valentine's Day home opener winning 2-1 and losing 8-6 with Wingate
University (7-1) today at the Peeler Complex.
In game one, both teams put up one run each in the first inning.
The 1-1 score would last the rest of regulation, sending the
contest into an extra inning. Bobcat pitcher Mandy Chandler
(Covington, Ga.) forced Wingate to hit into a double play
and then struck out the next batter to get through the top half.
In the bottom of the eighth with one out, Lindsey Swanson
(Kennesaw, Ga.) grounded out to shortstop. Noticing the
first baseman not paying attention, Haley Holloway
(McIntrye, Ga.) advanced home on the play to win the game
2-1.
Picking up the loss for the Bulldogs, pitcher Allison Smith gave
up two hits, two runs, walked four and fanned five batters for a
complete game effort, falling to 2-1 for the season. Chandler went
eight innings allowing eight hits, walking four and striking out 14
improving to 6-1.
After suffering its first loss of the season, Wingate bounced
back in game two with a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth
inning. The Bobcats rallied back in the sixth, tallying six runs.
With one out, six singles in a row helped get the rally going, and
Swanson followed the six consecutive safeties with a two-run double
to give GCSU a 6-5 lead. Georgia College out-hit the Bulldogs 13-9
in game two.
With momentum on the Georgia College side, a seventh inning
three-run homer by Emily Chavis snatched the lead away, giving the
Bulldogs the 8-6 final.
Bobcat ace Chandler tossed seven more innings giving up eight
hits, allowing five earned runs, walking one and sitting down 14
batters. The senior threw an estimated 290 pitches for the day with
28 strikeouts. She fell to 6-2 for 2009 campaign.
Offensively, Stephanie
Lezcano (Columbus, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with a run and
RBI while Parker was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Swanson also had two RBI
going 1-for-4 while senior Tonya Medders
(Bascom, Fla.) and junior Kayla Smith
(Lexington, S.C.) both looked strong at the plate each
going 3-for-4 and scoring a run apiece.
Chandler now has 874 career strikeouts, standing one behind
Armstrong Atlantic State University's Annie Sells for second in
Peach Belt Conference (PBC) history. Chandler's 76th
career win came in the opener, putting her at fourth in PBC history
passing Columbus State University's Angela Lancaster.
The Bobcats are back in action, Wednesday, Feb. 18 at home
against Peach Belt Conference (PBC) opponent Georgia Southwestern
(2-4) in the doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
