CARROLLTON, Ga.- The Georgia College &
State University softball team (15-11, 3-1 PBC) fell to the
University of West Georgia (14-8) in today's (March 10)
doubleheader 7-3 and 6-2 at Oil Park.
Down 4-1 into the top of the sixth, the Bobcats cut it close
with a two-run inning, only to have the Wolves respond with three
runs to put it back out of reach. Maggie Davis (Dacula,
Ga.) singled home Sherquita
Bostick (Florence, S.C.) who had doubled to start the
sixth.
Both teams posted 10 hits in game one, but unlike the Wolves,
the Bobcats were not able to translate those hits into runs.
Freshman Stephanie
Lezcano (Columbus, Ga.) went 2-for-4 at the plate for
Georgia College, scoring one run, while senior Tonya Medders
(Bascom, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Senior centerfielder Bostick was 1-for-3 at bat with the one run
while designated player Davis was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Jessica
Solomon (Douglasville, Ga.) added a 2-for-3 opener.
Lezcano, Bostick and Solomon all ripped doubles for the Bobcats.
Senior Mandy Chandler
(Covington, Ga.) tossed five innings for the Bobcats,
giving up 10 hits and seven runs while recording eight strikeouts.
Chandler took the loss falling to 13-6 for the season while West
Georgia's Haley Dunn snagged the win.
In game two, the Wolves handcuffed the Bobcats, out-hitting them
13 to three in the 6-2 GCSU loss. Senior shortstop Lindsey Swanson
(Kennesaw, Ga.) went 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI
while classmate Bostick echoed those stats. Junior leftfielder
Haley
Holloway (McIntyre, Ga.) was 1-for-3 at bat scoring
one run while Solomon claimed the other Georgia College run.
A Swanson single scored Solomon in the third, cutting the lead
to 2-1, but the Wolves got a big four-run fifth to come out with
the doubleheader sweep.
Burnett threw six innings with 13 hits, six runs, three walks
and two strikeouts collecting her third loss of the season. In the
circle for the Wolves, Kacie Crider allowed three hits and two runs
while fanning seven Bobcats for a complete-game effort.
The Bobcats are back in action, Thursday March 12 when they host
Peach Belt Conference (PBC) opponent Georgia Southwestern State
University for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at the Peeler
Complex.
