MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College &
State University softball team (18-12) got an outstanding pitching
effort in game one, then fell victim to the error in game two in a
split with Carson-Newman College (16-8) today (March 18) at the
Peeler Complex. The Bobcats won game one 2-0 and lost in game two
4-3.
Game one buzzed through in just 1 hour and 19 minutes, thanks in
large part to the right arm of Mandy Chandler
(Covington, Ga.) mowing down Eagle hitters to the tune of
a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. The shutout was her fifth of
the year.
The Bobcats got one run each in the second and third, breaking
the scoreless game when Sherquita
Bostick's (Florence, S.C.) one-out triple was followed
by a Kayla
Smith (Lexington, S.C.) single to right center.
GCSU got another run in the third, when Stephanie
Lezcano (Columbus, Ga.) tripled home Kati Pickowitz
(Keller, Texas) who had led off with a walk.
Chandler kept a no-hitter for 5 1/3 innings, when Brianne Coon
singled. Not a single Eagle reached third base. Eagle freshman Mary
Shealy (11-6) had a complete game effort in the loss.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair that Carson-Newman took
over in the fifth. The Eagles scored twice in that inning, despite
not recording a hit. A walk and two Bobcat errors helped CNC take
the lead.
The Bobcats scored the first runs in the second again, getting
two on a Jessica Solomon
(Douglasville, Ga.) single and an Eagle miscue. After CNC
tied it up in the top of the fourth 2-2, Georgia College responded
with a run in the bottom half, again on an Eagle error.
Freshman Haley Burnett
(Columbus, Ga.) gave up four runs-just two earned-over
four innings in the loss (1-4) fanning four. Chandler tossed the
final three in relief, no-hitting the Eagles with seven more
whiffs. CNC starter Brittany Linton (4-1) went the distance with
five hits and just one earned run.
On the day, Chandler recorded 18 strikeouts to give her 1,041 in
her career, passing Emporia State University's Melissa Stevens into
10th place in Division II history. The victory in game
one gives her 86 in a career, tying for the Peach Belt Conference
(PBC) record set by Annie Sells of Armstrong Atlantic State
University in 2002.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, March 20 at 2 p.m.
hosting Lander University (12-16, 1-5 PBC).
