MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College &
State University softball team (30-20, 12-6 PBC) closed out the
regular season at home tonight (April 15) losing two games to No. 2
North Georgia (39-3, 17-1 PBC) 5-2 and 7-1.
Game one was a heartbreaker for Georgia College. With a North
Georgia home run by Leslee Smith in the second inning the only run
in the contest, the Bobcats thought they had game one when a
Tonya
Medders (Bascom, Fla.) double plated two runs in the
bottom of the sixth inning, giving them a 2-1 lead. But the Saints
answered with a four-run seventh inning putting the 5-2 game out of
reach for Georgia College.
The Bobcats managed just three hits, as senior shortstop
Lindsey Swanson
(Kennesaw, Ga.) led the 'Cats at the plate going
2-for-3 scoring one run.
In the circle, senior Mandy Chandler
(Covington, Ga.) claimed the 8-3 loss, falling to 25-11
for the season. She tossed 6 1/3 innings allowing eight hits and
five runs while sitting down seven Saint batters. Those strikeouts
give the Bobcat ace 1,169 in her career, enough to tie for sixth in
the NCAA Division II record books.
Sarah Phillips took the win for North Georgia, improving to
28-1. She gave up three hits and two runs while fanning 11 Bobcat
batters for a complete-game effort. The Saint star at the plate was
Leslee Smith, going 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI.
Game two was a slightly different story, as the Saints would get
all the runs they'd need in the very first inning. North Georgia
plated three runs in the first frame on just one hit, a bunt
single. The Saints got their runs on two wild pitches and a passed
ball.
The Bobcats' run came in the third, when leftfielder Haley Holloway
(McIntyre, Ga.) exhibited some excellent base-running. She
led off with a single, taking second after a single from second
baseman Allison Schiwmer
(Cumming, Ga.). Swanson then knocked a ball to short, and
while she was beating out the double play, Holloway rounded third
and scored on an unaware NGCSU defense.
The rally would stop there, as North Georgia would add one in
the fourth and another three in the seventh for the 7-1 final.
Freshman righty Haley Burnett
(Columbus, Ga.) took the loss (1-7) in the complete game,
fanning eight and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and four
walks. North Georgia's Trisha Snider (11-2) allowed a run on five
hits, striking out six.
Schwimer had a great game two from the leadoff spot, going
3-for-3 including a triple. The Saints' leadoff Laura Voyles also
did the job, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, April 17 at 1:30 p.m.
traveling to the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament in
Florence, S.C. As the No. 2 seed, Georgia College will face the
winner of No. 7-seed Francis Marion University and No. 10-seed
Lander University.
