game two
PEMBROKE, N.C.
- No. 8 Georgia College & State University
baseball (30-12, 15-8 PBC) split a doubleheader at UNC Pembroke
(34-14, 11-11 PBC) dropping game one 5-3 before rebounding with an
8-7 win.
Game one saw the Bobcats score runs late, getting shut out for
the first five innings on just two hits. Finding themselves down
3-0 in the sixth with one out, centerfielder Sean Harrell (Martinez,
Ga.) ripped his sixth home run of the season to right, a
solo shot. Rightfielder Derek Johns
(Waynesville, Ga.) followed with a single, and after a
wild pitch and a walk, scored from second on a Buddy Elmore
(Dallas) single, cutting the lead to 3-2.
A pair of UNCP singles in the bottom half extended the lead to
4-2, but Bobcat leftfielder Kyle Allen (Conyers,
Ga.) trimmed it back to one at 4-3 with a solo home run to
lead off the eighth. UNCP put one more across in the bottom half
for the 5-3 final.
Georgia College had the tying run on first with two down in the
bottom of the ninth, thanks to a pair of walks, but a flyout to
right ended the game.
Pembroke starter Matt McGovern (7-0) went seven innings,
allowing three earned runs for the win. Ryan Kirkman grabbed his
ninth save with two innings of work. For the Bobcats, starter
Dylan
Lightell (Rosamond, Calif.) evened his record at 3-3
with the complete-game loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits
and fanning five.
Game two was all Bobcats early, posting a 6-0 lead after the
first two trips to the plate. The big blow came in the form of a
Brooks
Robinson (Evans, Ga.) grand slam in the first, driving
in four of the five runs for GCSU that inning. The big bomb to left
was Robinson's third of the year.
A three-run fourth for UNCP, featuring a two-run home run by
designated hitter Joe Mangum, cut GCSU's lead to 7-5, and the solo
shot in the fifth by Pembroke first baseman Seth Kivett trimmed it
to a one-run advantage.
An insurance run came in the seventh for the Bobcats, as
Robinson's two-out double plated pinch runner Paul Bordon (Martinez,
Ga.). With Georgia College up 8-6 going into the bottom of
the ninth, UNCP loaded the bases with two out with the benefit of a
single, hit-batsmen and a walk. Bobcat closer Martin Dewald
(Mannheim, Germany), who issued the intentional pass to
load the bases, followed that up with an unintentional pass to
score a run and cut the lead to 8-7. With the tying run 90 feet
away, Dewald fanned Kivett to end the game.
With the one-out save Dewald has 11 on the season, a Georgia
College season record, passing Michael Newman's
effort from a year ago.
Johns had back-to-back multi hit games today, going a total of
4-for-9 with two RBI and two runs. Robinson posted the big game
two, going 2-for-5 with five RBI and a run.
The split combined with a sweep by USC Aiken over Lander
University put the Bobcats and Pacers tied at the top of the Peach
Belt Conference (PBC) Standings at 15-8.
The Bobcats finish the three-game set with UNCP with a single
game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
