MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Matt Pitts (Brunswick,
Ga.) had five RBI and Dylan Lightell
(Rosamond, Calif.) went eight strong innings, as the No.
14 Georgia College & State University baseball team (33-13)
beat the University of Montevallo (22-29-1) 15-1 tonight (April 24)
at John Kurtz Field.
Lightell (4-3) scattered five hits for just one run over eight
innings, fanning five Falcons. His counterpart, Caleb McLeod (2-6)
went 5 1/3 innings in the loss, striking out five.
The Bobcats put up six runs in the first inning, starting the
game with three consecutive doubles. Pitts ripped a three-run bomb
to dead-center to get half of the tallies, a moon shot estimated at
over 430 feet.
Georgia College bookended their runs, getting seven more in the
eighth frame after being shut out over the previous four innings.
Pitts and senior Danny McCorkell
(Wentzville, Mo.) each ripped two-run doubles in the
eighth.
Centerfielder Sean Harrell (Martinez,
Ga.) was 3-for-3, scoring three times and driving in one,
while Pitts had a 2-for-5 day scoring once. Third baseman
Paul
Bordon (Martinez, Ga.), outfielder Derek Johns
(Waynesville, Ga.) and leftfielder Kyle Allen (Conyers,
Ga.) each had two hits.
The Bobcats also stole seven bases in as many tries. GCSU now
has 130 steals on the season, good for fourth in school history.
Georgia College had 132 in 2008, 141 in 1999 and a school-record
154 in 1985.
Georgia College finishes a three-game set with the Falcons with
a doubleheader tomorrow, April 25 at 1 p.m.
