MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Out-scoring its opponents
39-7 over the course of a doubleheader, the No. 14 Georgia College
& State University baseball team (35-13) swept the University
of Montevallo (22-31-1) 20-2 and 19-5 at John Kurtz Field today
(April 25).
Third baseman Matt Pitts (Brunswick,
Ga.) and catcher Pete Paris (Scranton,
Pa.) had banner days for the Bobcats. Pitts was a combined
3-for-9, scoring three times and driving in three, with two home
runs, one coming in each game. Paris did Pitts even one better,
going 5-for-7, blasting a grand slam and a two-run shot, driving in
10 runs and scoring five.
In game one, the Bobcats ripped four home runs and busted a 4-2
game wide open with a 12-run sixth inning.
Five Bobcats had multi-hit games, with Paris leading the way
with a 2-for-4 game, driving in four and scoring twice. Leftfielder
Kyle
Allen (Conyers, Ga.) was 2-for-3 with two runs, and
senior Danny McCorkell
(Wentzville, Mo.) came off the bench for a 2-for-2 day,
scoring twice and driving in two with a home run.
First baseman Pitts went 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, also
knocking a home run, while shortstop ChandlerSnell
(Loganville, Ga.) finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Freshman
Ryan
Holland (Duluth, Ga.) swatted his first career
round-tripper, a pinch hit solo blast.
The beneficiary of the runs was lefty starter Clete Jessup (Darien,
Ga.) going 5 1/3 with four whiffs and two runs allowed for
hits fifth win (5-3). John Michael Caraway (5-5) went 4 1/3 in the
loss, allowing four earned runs and fanning seven.
The Bobcats scored 20-plus runs for just the second time this
season, the last being a 22-2 victory over Columbia Union College
Feb. 17. Every spot in the order scored at least one run.
Game two was more of the same, as GCSU got another 12-run
inning-this time the fourth-en route to the 19-5 drubbing.
Paris was 3-for-4 with six RBI on the two bombs, scoring three
times. Second baseman Brooks Robinson
(Evans, Ga.) was a perfect 4-for-4, driving in four and
scoring three times, knocking his fourth home run of the year.
Third baseman Steve Muoio (Rochester,
N.Y.) managed a 2-for-3, scoring twice and plating one,
while McCorkell was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs from the
leadoff spot.
Again, every spot in the GCSU order scored a run. Righty starter
Eric
Pettepher (Gordon, Ga.) nabbed the team lead in wins,
improving to 6-2 with three earned runs over five innings, fanning
six. UM starter Wes Rich (0-3) made it three innings in the loss,
allowing 13 earned runs.
Georgia College stole eight bases over the two games, giving it
138 on the season, passing last year's 132 into third on the
school's single-season recordbook. The Bobcats are just three
behind second place (the school's NCAA-era record) at 141 in 1999.
GCSU is now 5-0 all-time against Montevallo.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, April 28 at 4 p.m.,
hosting Valdosta State University at John Kurtz Field.
