MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 6 Georgia College
& State University men's tennis team (14-2, 7-0 PBC) slammed
past the Saints of North Georgia (5-10, 1-5 PBC) 7-2 today (April
9). The Bobcats have clinched at least a share of the Peach Belt
Conference (PBC) Regular-Season Championship.
Georgia College took two in doubles play at the second and third
doubles slot.
An unfamiliar duo of Erick Siqueira (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) and Robert Angelucci
(Acworth, Ga.) got their first victory as a pair as they
defeated Daniel Aguilon and Brandon Sloan 8-2 at third
doubles.
At second doubles, the Bobcat twosome of Max Beliankou (Minsk,
Belarus) and Leo Bernardes (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) beat North Georgia's Samuel Moore and
Luciano Paes Neto 8-4. Beliankou and Bernardes are now 3-2 on the
season. The Georgia College pair of Joao Casagrande
(Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Francis Yoshimoto
(Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell to the Saints' Grant Partrick and
Adrien Saulais 8-5.
National No. 8 Siqueira won 6-4, 6-1 over Neto at first singles.
The senior improves to 11-4 on the year in singles action with a
team high seven wins in a row. At the two spot, No. 24 Yoshimoto
defeated Moore 6-2, 6-1. Yoshimoto moves to 13-3 in singles play on
the season, owning the team lead in wins.
Beliankou beat Aguilon 6-2, 7-5 at third singles and moves to
12-4 on the 2009 spring campaign. At fourth singles, the Bobcats'
Bernardes fell 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to the Saints' Patrick.
Casagrande was victorious 6-1, 6-0 over Saulais at number five
singles, and Angelucci defeated Sloan 6-1, 6-2 at six singles as he
remains an undefeated 4-0 on the season.
The PBC regular season title is the first in program history,
and the first conference title in men's tennis in 20 years, as the
NAIA era then-Colonials were Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Champions in 1989.
The Bobcats wrap up the regular season hosting No. 18 Lander
University for Senior Day Monday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the
Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
