game two
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Junior Lauren Potts (Gray,
Ga.) ripped a three-run, pinch-hit home run in the sixth
inning of game one, helping Georgia College & State University
softball (4-2) to a split with the University of West Georgia (3-5)
Wednesday (Feb. 17) at the Peeler Complex. The Bobcats took game
one 5-4 and dropped game two 11-8.
The Bobcats hosted "Pack the Park in Pink" for breast cancer
research sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha.
In game one, Georgia College got two runs in the first, and that
lead held up until the fifth inning, where the Wolves matched the
score. UWG went in front 4-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth on a
Kaley Sullivan single, setting up Potts' heroics in the bottom
half. Sullivan finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run.
Second baseman Lindsay Ellenburg went 2-for-2 with a run.
After a leadoff walk to Haley Burnett
(Columbus, Ga.), and a sacrifice bunt, Belourse
Jean-Francis (Naples, Fla.) also reached on a walk.
Potts pinch hit, taking a 1-0 pitch deep to left center and the 5-4
lead. Burnett set down the Wolves in order in the top half for the
victory.
Burnett (3-0) tossed all seven innings, allowing four unearned
runs on seven hits, striking out five. She also drove in a pair on
an RBI single in the first. Ashley West (0-1) entered in the sixth,
suffering the loss with one inning of work.
In game two, a few Bobcat rallies weren't enough to overcome the
11 runs put up by West Georgia. Georgia College responded to the
Wolves' first inning run with four of their own, a two-run single
from Burnett, and a two-run home run by Anna Parker (Columbus,
Ga.), her first of the year.
The Wolves put five more on the board in the top of the second,
taking over 6-4. The 'Cats brought it even with single runs
in the third and fourth, the game-tying shot coming in an RBI
single from Kelsea Martin
(Dacula, Ga.) plating Kati Pickowitz
(Keller, Texas) who reached on a single of her own.
West Georgia blew the game open with a four-run fifth, the big
blow coming in a two-run single from Preseason All-Gulf South
Conference (GSC) centerfielder Candice Brown. After UWG put another
run on the board in the sixth on a Crissy Rainwater solo blast,
GCSU got two in the bottom of the sixth on a Martin double and Wolf
fielding error.
The Bobcats nearly had one more rally in them, putting the tying
run at the plate with two down, but a pop-up ended the game.
Freshman Kristi Rodriguez
(Marietta, Ga.) fell to 1-2 with six innings of relief
work, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks, fanning two.
John Milledge Academy grad Haley Dunn (2-1) returned home and
picked up the win for West Georgia with 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Martin was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in game two, and
Parker had a 2-for-4 game with the home run, three RBI and a run.
Pickowitz also had a 2-for-4 game with the run scored.
The Bobcats hit the road for the Charger Chillout Tournament
hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville in Decatur, Ala.
this weekend. Georgia College starts the six-game, three-day
tournament against the University of West Alabama Friday, Feb. 19
