DECATUR, Ala. - The Georgia College & State
University softball team (4-6) has been greeted rather rudely by a
tough 2010 Charger Chillout Tournament field, dropping four games
in two days at the tournament hosted by the University of
Alabama-Huntsville. The Bobcats lost to the University of West
Alabama and No. 20 Wayne State University Friday, and dropped games
to the University of North Alabama and Bellarmine University
Saturday.
It took extra innings for West Alabama to get past the Bobcats
Friday 5-3. UWA picked up two in the top of the eighth, and Georgia
College couldn't respond in the loss. Kelsea Martin
(Dacula, Ga.) and Kayla Smith
(Lexington, S.C.) both scored on an Anna Parker (Columbus,
Ga.) double in the third, the first of two doubles for
Parker. The second, coming in the sixth, set up Lauren Potts (Gray,
Ga.) for a pinch-hit RBI single. Sophomore Haley Burnett
(Columbus, Ga.) took the loss, her first of the year.
Game two Friday was a 4-1 loss to No. 20 Wayne State, the
Bobcats' first battle with a ranked team this season. Sophomore
Sabrina Chandler
(Covington, Ga.) scored the lone run for Georgia College
when she singled and eventually scored on an error by WSU. Freshman
Kristi Rodriguez
(Marietta, Ga.) took the loss (1-3).
The Bobcats were no-hit by North Alabama's Jennifer Sexton in
game one Saturday, with Burnett again getting the loss, dropping to
3-2.
Game two today was a 3-1 loss to Bellarmine, the run coming for
GCSU in the third. Senior Allison Schwimer
(Cumming, Ga.) reached on a single and eventually scored
on a passed ball in that inning. Parker had another double, her
third in two days. Sophomore Caitlin Duvall
(Douglasville, Ga.) took the loss (0-1).
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. playing
the University of Arkansas-Monticello, then finishing the
tournament with a game against Maryville (Mo.) University at 3 p.m.
