HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Georgia College &
State University softball team (6-12) ended a tough two-day
non-conference road trip Friday night with a pair of losses at
Lincoln Memorial University (12-0). The Railsplitters won game one
7-1 and took game two 8-5.
Game one was tight until the sixth. LMU put up a pair in the
second, taking advantage of a Georgia College error. The Bobcats
had to wait until the fifth to cut the lead in half. Kayla Smith
(Lexington, S.C.) reached as leadoff hitter on a fielding
error, moved over on a sacrifice bunt and came across on Brandie
Monroe's (Guyton, Ga.) single.
Georgia College's best chance for the tie came the next inning,
when after a pair of outs to start, Haley Burnett
(Columbus, Ga.) and Smith had back-to-back singles. The
final out then followed to end the threat.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Railsplitters blew the game open
with five runs. The 'Cats helped out with three errors, as
three of the five runs were unearned.
Burnett took the loss (4-6) in five innings, fanning five and
allowing three earned runs. Ciera Mudd improved to 4-0 with 5 2/3
innings allowing no earned runs and just three hits.
The Bobcats got more firepower in game two, tripling their hit
total and finding themselves down by just a single run in the
bottom of the sixth. LMU once again struck late with more insurance
runs.
The 'Cats jumped on LMU early, as Lauren Potts (Gray,
Ga.) ripped the third home run of her young Bobcat career,
a two-run opposite-field blast for a first-inning lead. LMU notched
five runs in the first three innings to take the lead back 5-2. An
RBI single by Kelsea Martin
(Dacula, Ga.) in the fifth, followed by an RBI double by
Monroe in the sixth made the score 5-4 heading into the bottom
half.
The Railsplitters got three runs on four hits and a sacrifice
fly, and the Bobcats suddenly found themselves down 8-4 going into
the last inning. Back-to-back singles started off the seventh, and
after an out, a Potts single drove home Martin. LMU starter Meghan
LaFevor then re-entered the contest, getting the final two outs to
preserve the LMU victory.
Potts finished game two at 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run.
Martin was the lone Bobcat with a pair of multi-hit games today,
going 4-for-8 total with two runs and an RBI.
Sophomore Caitlin Duvall
(Douglasville, Ga.) dropped to 0-3 with 1 2/3 innings of
work. LaFevor improved to 7-0, going six total innings for the win.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 3 at 4 p.m.,
hosting St. Andrews Presbyterian College at the Peeler Complex.
