FLORENCE, S.C. – The Georgia College
& State University softball team (10-23, 2-6 PBC) lost both
ends of a soggy doubleheader Sunday at Francis Marion University
(24-9, 9-5 PBC), getting upended 5-3 in game one before dropping
game two 9-1.
Down 2-1 into the top of the sixth, the Bobcats took the lead in
game one. A single to right center by leftfielder Belourse Jean-Francis (Naples, Fla.) plated
both pinch runner Melanie
Goolsby (Guyton, Ga.) and catcher Anna
Parker (Columbus, Ga.) for a 3-2 lead.
With the bases loaded and one down in the bottom half, Chelle
Phillips ripped a bases-clearing triple to snatch the victory from
Georgia College, 5-3.
Sophomore Haley
Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) fell to 7-11 with four earned
runs in the complete game, fanning six. Michaela Wolf improved to
14-4 with the seven inning win.
Burnett was 2-for-3, as was Jean-Francis, driving in three and
ripping a double. Phillips was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run for
the Patriots.
Game two featured a big six-run fifth by FMU, halting the game
early.
The highlight of the second match was a home run by senior
second baseman Kayla
Smith (Lexington, S.C.) in the fourth, accounting for
the team's lone run. Smith is now tied with Aundrea
Baker (2003-06) for sixth in school history with 13 career
home runs. The RBI also knots Smith with Nikki Smith
(2004-07) at eighth with 72 in Kayla Smith's four
seasons.
A grand slam by Wolf provided a big part of the necessary
scoring punch in the fifth, and Ashley Jaramillo finished 2-for-3
with three RBI.
Freshman Kristi
Rodriguez (Marietta, Ga.) fell to 3-6 with the loss,
allowing a run on 2/3 of an inning. Cea Knox (10-4) got the win,
going all five, allowing two hits and the one run.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 24 at 4
p.m. hosting USC Aiken for another Peach Belt Conference (PBC)
battle. The Bobcats are tied for fifth in the loss column with a
2-6 conference mark, one ahead of the Pacers' 5-7 league
record.
