MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College
& State University softball team (11-24, 3-7 PBC) divided wins
in a crucial Peach Belt Conference (PBC) doubleheader with USC
Aiken (14-17, 6-8 PBC) Wednesday at the Peeler Complex. The Bobcats
took game one 7-3, then dropped the nightcap 13-4.
Senior centerfielder Allison Schwimer (Cumming, Ga.) was 4-for-4
with four runs, a double and an RBI in game one. Sophomore
Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) went 2-for-4,
driving in three, and freshman Kelsea
Martin (Dacula, Ga.) echoed the 2-for-4, scoring a
run.
The Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the second when down
2-1, a Schwimer double plated Jessica
Solomon (Douglasville, Ga.) who led the inning with a
single. A single from Belourse Jean-Francis (Naples, Fla.) then gave
Georgia College the lead.
Two more runs scored on a Lauren
Potts (Gray, Ga.) pinch-hit single in the fourth, and
then GCSU added another pair in the sixth on a Burnett single.
Burnett (8-11) got the win in relief, going 3 2/3 innings,
scattering three hits and two walks for one unearned run. Pacer
starter Kathleen Nichols (1-7) went the distance, allowing five
earned runs on 12 hits.
Game two had a near comeback by the 'Cats, thwarted by a
six-run sixth.
Down 7-1 after three, the Bobcats plated three runs in the
fourth, cutting the score to 7-4. Jean-Francis led off with a
single, scoring on a Burnett double one pitch later. A Solomon
single to center brought Burnett home, then after a walk and a
sacrifice bunt, a Potts sacrifice fly scored Solomon.
The 'Cats had the tying run at the plate in the fifth, but
lined into a double play to end the threat. Then the Pacers
responded with the big six-run inning to put it out of reach.
Burnett was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, finishing at
4-for-7 with her fifth home run, two runs and five RBI for the day.
Jean-Francis added a 2-for-3 effort with a run. USCA's Lauren
Locklear was the big slugger for game two, going 3-for-4 with a
triple, two RBI and two runs. Three other Pacers had two hit games.
Freshman Kristi
Rodriguez (Marietta, Ga.) took the loss (3-6), going 3
1/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks.
USCA's Toni Flessate (7-7) got the complete-game win halted
in the sixth, allowing all four runs earned on six hits.
The split puts GCSU at 3-7, ninth in the loss column for the PBC
standings.
