COLUMBUS,
Ga. – Georgia College & State University
softball (11-28, 3-11 PBC) scored 11 runs Wednesday night, the
second-most in a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) doubleheader this
season, but it wasn't enough, as the Bobcats dropped a pair,
9-5 and 10-6 at Columbus State University (18-21-1, 4-8
PBC).
Senior Kayla
Smith (Lexington,
S.C.) swatted a pair of home runs
in game two and finished 4-for-8 with three runs and five
RBI.
Game one was won in
the late innings by CSU, as the Bobcats were up 5-4 into the fifth.
The Cougars knotted it up with one in the fifth, and took the lead
with a four-run sixth.
Sophomores
Anna Parker
(Columbus,
Ga.) and Haley
Burnett (Columbus,
Ga.) tried to make the most of
their homecomings, as Parker went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI,
and Burnett finished 2-for-2 with her sixth home run of the season.
Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run.
Burnett (8-13) took
the loss, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine earned runs and
fanning five.
Game two was also
snatched from the 'Cats late, as a four-run fifth put the
Bobcats up 5-0. The Cougars responded in a big way, plating eight
runs in the bottom half, with another two in the sixth for the 10-6
victory.
Smith ripped a
three-run opposite field shot in the fifth after third baseman
Kelsea Martin
(Dacula,
Ga.) led off the inning with her
second home run of the season. Smith added a solo shot in the
seventh with one out, this time taking the ball to left.
Martin finished
2-for-4, driving in one and scoring twice. Smith was 2-for-4 with
two runs and four RBI in game two, tying Burnett for the team lead
in long balls at six. Smith has 16 career home runs good for sixth
in school history, two behind Kristin Hughes
(2002-03). Parker added another 2-for-4 effort in the
second game.
Sophomore Caitlin Duvall
(Douglasville,
Ga.) fell to 0-7 with the loss,
as she allowed the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bobcats are back
in action Saturday, April 3 at noon, hosting Flagler College
(24-18, 6-6 PBC) at the Peeler Complex. The Saints most recently
swept Lees McRae College 6-0 and 4-1 Tuesday.
