MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 12 Georgia
College & State University baseball team (25-11, 13-4 PBC)
split a doubleheader this afternoon (April 10) with No. 20 UNC
Pembroke (27-10, 12-8 PBC) for the first day of the Bobcats'
“Senior Weekend.” The Braves took game one 8-6, while
the 'Cats claimed game two 13-2.
Georgia College started things off in game one putting up two
runs in the first inning. UNCP answered back plating runs in the
second and third innings to knot things up at 2-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Pitts
(Brunswick, Ga.) scored off a Jason
Veyna (Lamar, Colo.) home run. A Steve
Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) fielder's choice sent
Chandler Snell (Loganville, Ga.) home, giving
the Bobcats a 5-2 lead.
However, the Braves wouldn't go away silently as Seth
Kivett put them ahead 6-5 with a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Pembroke's bats remained hot with a two-run homer by Kenny
Mickens in the eighth.
Down 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Pitts doubled again with
two outs, plating Paul
Bordon (Martinez, Ga.). The next Bobcat flied out to
leftfield, giving the Braves the 8-6 win.
Game two as a completely different story as the Georgia College
bats came alive, out-hitting Pembroke 14-8 in the 13-2 victory.
Eric Pettepher (Gordon, Ga.) improved to 4-0
on the season, pitching a complete game. The junior gave up eight
hits, walked three and fanned seven.
The Bobcats hit four home runs with Pitts, Shawn Ward
(Martinez, Ga.), Richard
Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) and Andrew
Evans (Milledgeville, Ga.) recording those. Ward went
3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, while Pirkle was 2-for-3 with
two RBI. Pitts went 2-for-5, scoring twice and batting in two more,
while Evans claimed three RBI.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, April 11 to close out the
three-game series and “Senior Weekend” at 1 p.m.
