MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 30 Georgia
College & State University women's tennis team (11-10,
6-6 PBC) clinched a spot in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC)
Tournament Wednesday, beating No. 32 Lander University (12-9, 5-7
PBC) 6-3.
In doubles action, the Bobcat French duo of Diane
Danna (Paris) and Bertille
Lion (Lyon, France) blanked the Bearcats'
Aurelia Ruffat and Ana Luiza Zaia 8-0. At the No. 2 spot, Georgia
College freshmen Kayla
Barksdale (Martinez, Ga.) and Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) overpowered
Eliza Adusmilli and Brandi Cordell 8-4, while Linda
Mosa (Stockholm, Sweden) and Adriana
Acuna (Peachtree City, Ga.) slid past Lander's
Caitlin Fell and Nicola James 8-6. The Bobcats held a 3-0 lead
going into singles play.
At first singles, No. 48 Danna swept Ruffat 6-2, 6-3, while
improving to 15-4 overall this season. The senior has won 11 out of
her last 12 matches. Slotted third in singles action, Lion
overwhelmed Fell 6-1 and 6-0, going 16-4 for the 2010 campaign and
claiming 12 of her last 13 matches. Lion's victory clinched
the team win. Barksdale fell to Cordell in the second position
after three sets, going 2-6, 6-3 and 10-6.
In the fourth spot, Lingner lost 6-1 and 6-3 to Adusmilii, while
Mosa defeated James in three sets, going 6-4, 3-6 and 10-4. At
sixth singles, Acuna surrendered to Newbold 6-4 and 6-3.
The Bobcats are back in action this weekend, traveling to
Clayton State University for the Peach Belt Tournament. The seeding
will be announced later this week.
